If you are like me and you use vitamin C to support your health, you may sabotage your journey with this Vitamin C enemy if you are not aware of this one fact. If there is one thing that you can do to put a strain your health, and cause Vitamin C consumption to be ineffective or less effective, it is the consumption of – yep you guessed it – SUGAR! 

While we have all heard that sugar is a really bad idea if you want to tap into ultimate health and well-being, the question that lingers remains a simple “why?” and “how does it hinder vitamin C to carry out its health promoting duties?”

Let’s break it down!

Vitamin C is used on cellular level to carry out health promoting duties within the body.  When the vitamin C enters the body’s cells, the cells use the vitamin C to carry out many different functions.

A few of the most prominent Vitamin C functions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Collagen – the most abundant protein in the body, specifically resulting in good skin health;
  2. Carnitine – energy production in cells; and
  3. Catecholamine – adrenaline, non-adrenaline and dopamine including neurotransmitters in the brain.

Sugar ruins these processes in the body where it is turned into glucose.  Apart from giving your body a massive blood sugar spike and then crashing down again, the cells allow glucose to enter in much greater levels than Vitamin C due to the GLUT-1 receptor that favours glucose to enter above Vitamin C at cellular level (this happens because vitamin C’s chemical structure is so similar to that of glucose, but glucose is more receivable).  Much less Vitamin C is entered into the cells, but much more glucose. The cells are basically drowned in glucose and as a result kept from the protective vitamin C abilities by the larger glucose content.  The Vitamin C cannot perform its immune supporting, health enhancement functions, scavenging pathogens and invaders like bacteria, optimally, like it would have if glucose was not present in unstable quantities. 

The immune system will now remain suppressed for at least 6-8 hours (which is the time lapse to digest and process the glucose and regain balance).

Because vitamin C is used throughout the whole body, this causes a domino effect that strains the entire immune system.

If you want to reap the benefits of a healthy body and mind on all levels, sugar consumption is a serious offence that will come around to provide you with due payback for offending this sugar / Vitamin C intake law. 

It is especially important to avoid any sugar when your immune system is suppressed, this will only make recovery more difficult and take longer to regain your equilibrium.  It is always advisable to act preventative and avoid health suppressing culprits like sugar.
